PROBLEM

Lack of space to create and implement a sensory regulating and life skills room or spaces is a problem in meeting our students academic, functional, behavioral, emotional, and communicative needs.

HOW MIGHT WE…

Create space for a sensory or calming room/area and a life skills room to meet the developmental, regulatory, communicative and functional needs of our special education students?

SOLUTION

The Chopin team secured and designed a room that will be used for the three Low Incidence classrooms as well as the sensory regulatory room for students to have a break during the day and to build social and emotional skills.Thinking creatively within constraints, they also created a portable system for students to bring sensory regulatory items with them in a backpack so that they can continue to build their life skills outside the sensory regulatory classroom. Students from general education classrooms will have access to the sensory/calming area when needed.
