PROBLEM
Student engagement is inhibited by a lack of self direction, focus, and ability to read on grade level.
HOW MIGHT WE…
Keep students engaged and empower students to work independently in order to be responsible adults similar to the workforce by leveraging technology in a positive way?
SOLUTION
Working within the constraints of being located in the Cook County Correctional Facility, York built a prototype that leverages Microsoft Office to offer greater choice and student-ownership of coursework. These changes not only encouraged student engagement and independent learning, but also equipped them with useful skills for the future.
IMPACT
“We realized that sometimes starting small is a good idea. Innovation does not always mean reworking an entire system, and empathy is one of the most important ideas to keep in mind when designing instruction.”
