ABOUT THE SCHOOL
School Type: Neighborhood
Grades served: K-8

PROBLEM
We seek to create a graduate that leave our school with a strong Mind, Heart and Effort to enact those values for the purpose of creating strong citizen to then produce a better world.
HOW MIGHT WE…
Create a learning opportunity that helps students develop social and emotional skills?
SOLUTION
We created a capstone performance task for all students to demonstrate evidence of meeting our school vision by through mentorship with students in a different grade level.
KEY LEARNING
The real problem was that we didn’t have students guiding themselves and their learning. Lessons in social emotional skills became a side effect to working together in a content area. For our purpose or initial innovation was to develop values demonstrated through a capstone performed by 8th grade students. We shifted our focus to 5th grade students, who are transitioning from middle school, to implement more of a mini capstone project. Fifth grade students working with 8th grade students turned out to be a great situation.

PLANS TO SCALE
We plan to formalize these types of mentoring relationships throughout the building: 8-5(2), 7-4(K), and 6-3(1). We will begin the year with a team building leadership retreat for 5th-8th grade students.
